Health Insurance Options

Graduate students may purchase or enroll in a health insurance plan from any source.  Here are options that may be available.

University Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP):
The university provides a health insurance option for all students that is reasonably priced and has coverage comparable to that of other premium plans on the market. The university has contracted with Academic HealthPlans (AHP) to service UMD’s student plans. To learn more about the University Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) available to graduate students, please go to umdgrad.myahpcare.com/.

Graduate students enrolled in at least one credit are eligible to enroll in SHIP.  Enrollment must be during the Open Enrollment period, or if a student has a qualifying event.  International graduate students should wait until they arrive in the US and have a local address before enrolling in SHIP.

The 2022-2023 Open Enrollment Periods and the coverage periods are listed in the chart below.

Maryland State Employee Health Insurance Plan (Graduate Assistants only):
Students who hold a graduate assistantship are eligible to enroll in a State of Maryland Employee Health insurance plan.  Enrollment must occur within 60 days of your start date. Coverage will start on the first of the month after you enroll.  Coverage will remain active while holding the assistantship.

To enroll in a Maryland State Employee Health Insurance plan, please consult the UMD Human Resources Benefits website at uhr.umd.edu/benefits/ and click on “How to Enroll.”

Important information about Summer Coverage on the Maryland State Employee Health Plan: If you maintain a graduate assistantship from one academic year to the next (i.e., Spring 2022 and then again in Fall 2022), then your health insurance coverage will remain active throughout the summer. If you DO NOT maintain a graduate assistantship from one academic year to the next  (i.e., Spring 2022 and then again in Fall 2022) then you will NOT have coverage over the summer. Please see more information in the Summer Coverage tab.

External Plan:
Students can choose to enroll in a health insurance plan from an external source, such as a spouse’s plan or a parent’s plan.  If enrolling in your spouse's plan, parent's plan or other external plan, we ask students to complete the External Health Insurance Reporting Form each year.
