Health Insurance Options

Graduate students may purchase or enroll in a health insurance plan from any source.  Here are options that may be available.

University's Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP):
The university provides a health insurance option for all students that is reasonably priced and has coverage comparable to that of other premium plans on the market. The university has contracted with Academic HealthPlans (AHP) to service UMD’s student plans.

Graduate students enrolled in at least one create are eligible to enroll in SHIP.  Enrollment must be during the Open Enrollment period, or if a student has a qualifying event.  The 2020-2021 Open Enrollment Periods and the coverage periods are listed in the chart below.  The 2021-2022 Open Enrollment and coverage periods are expected to be the same (or very similar) to the 2020-2021 coverage periods.

Re-enrollment in SHIP each year is not automatic. Graduate students must take active steps to re-enroll each year.

Maryland State Employee Health Insurance Plan (Graduate Assistants only):
Students who hold a graduate assistantship are eligible to enroll in a State of Maryland Employee Health insurance plan.  Enrollment must occur within 60 days of your start date. Coverage will start on the first of the month after you enroll.  Coverage will remain active while students hold an assistantship.

To learn about how to enroll in a Maryland State Employee Health Insurance plan, please consult the UMD Human Resources Benefits website at  https://uhr.umd.edu/benefits/ and click on “How to Enroll.”

Important information about Summer Coverage: If you maintain a graduate assistantship from one academic year to the next (i.e., Spring 2021 and then again in Fall 2021), then your health insurance coverage will remain active throughout the summer. If you DO NOT maintain a graduate assistantship from one academic year to the next  (i.e., Spring 2021 and then again in Fall 2021) then you will NOT have coverage over the summer. Please see more information in the Summer Coverage tab.

External Plan:
Students can choose to enroll in a health insurance plan from an external source, such as a parent’s plan or a spouse’s plan.  If enrolling in an external plan, we ask that students to complete the External Health Insurance Reporting Form each year.  This form is available on the Academic HealthPlans (AHP) website at umdgrad.myahpcare.com/alreadyhaveinsurance. Only students who have insurance from an external source will need to complete this form.
