UMD to Observe National Postdoc Appreciation Week

The University of Maryland will be observing National Postdoc Appreciation Week (NPAW) for the first time next week, September 19-23, 2016, to recognize the significant contributions that UMD’s more than 500 postdoctoral scholars make to research and discovery throughout the university. NPAW is sponsored by the new Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA)—a joint effort of the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, the Office of the Vice President for Research and the Graduate School.

OPA is pleased to announce the following activities in observation of NPAW:

Monday, September 19, 2:30 - 3:30pm, "How to Maximize Your Postdoc"
2124 Lee Building

You are invited to learn more about the resources available to postdocs at UMD.  Meet the Directors of Faculty Initiatives, the Graduate School Writing Center, Professional and Career Development and a Postdoc from the Teaching and Learning Transformation Center. We will also answer any questions regarding the postdoc manual.

Wednesday, September 21, 1:30 - 3:00pm, "Postdoc Coffee/Tea Hour"
2124 Lee Building

Mingle with fellow postdocs for mid-day refreshments and meet the new coordinator for the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA).  We are serving up coffee, tea and hot chocolate and light fare.

Friday, September 23, 1:30 - 4:30pm "Postdoc Write-In"
4123 McKeldin Library
Writing regularly and with a sense of support contributes to accomplishing writing goals. You can join your postdoctoral colleagues every Friday afternoon (beginning 9/23) from 1:30-4:30 pm in 4123 McKeldin for structured time to write.

Off Campus - University of Maryland, Baltimore
, September, 23rd, 12:00pm - 5:00pm

The UMB Postdoc Advisory Committee along with the Office of Postdoctoral Scholars (UMB) will be hosting a Postdoctoral Fellows Retreat.  This retreat is a chance for postdocs to meet, network and explore career options, and have fun!  The event runs from 12pm to 5pm, lunch is provided for $10/per person.  Please contact Blessing Enekwe if you are interested in attending this event in Baltimore, pre-registration is required.

About National Postdoc Appreciation Week

2016 marks the seventh celebration of National Postdoc Appreciation Week in the United States and Canada. Since 2009, NPAW has been sponsored by the National Postdoctoral Association. In 2010, this week was officially recognized by the U.S. House of Representatives. In 2015, 122 institutions in the United States and Canada participated and organized events to recognize postdoctoral researchers.
