Call for Nominations - Graduate Student Distinguished Service Award

January 24, 2017

Each spring the University of Maryland celebrates graduate students who have made outstanding contributions to the University community in the areas of service, involvement, leadership, and scholarship.  I invite you to nominate a graduate student for the 2016-2017 Graduate Student Distinguished Service Award.  The award will be presented on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at the University Student Leadership Awards Program hosted by the Adele H. Stamp Student Union – Center for Campus Life and Omicron Delta Kappa.

Candidates for this award will be judged using the following award criteria:

  • Service to their department, the campus and broader community
  • Involvement in campus organizations, issues and activities
  • Demonstrated leadership in departmental or campus graduate student issues
  • Good scholarship, as reflected in research, publication, presentations, and professional contributions.

These criteria will be evaluated with the following considerations:

  • As the “Distinguished Service” award, service to the department, the campus and broader community is the primary criteria.
  • Service, involvement, leadership, and scholarship should be above and beyond the scope of typical assistantship or job responsibilities.
  • The award is not intended to reward scholarship for scholarship’s sake, but rather scholarly work that complements a nominee’s service to department, campus and community.
  • The award is intended to recognize the service and contributions made by the individual during his/her career as a graduate student at the University of Maryland.  Service, involvement, leadership and             scholarship occurring prior to the start of the individual’s graduate studies will be considered as background context but not as qualifications for the award.

You will be asked to complete a nomination form with the nominator’s and nominee’s information.  Only one nomination may be submitted for each nominee.  Nomination materials include at least one letter of nomination addressing the above criteria in no more than two single-spaced pages, and the nominee’s current résumé or curriculum vitae.  We will also ask that the nominee include a brief bio (maximum 50 words) and a personal statement that describes how they have demonstrated outstanding contributions to the University community in the areas of service, involvement, leadership, and scholarship.  The personal statement limit is 500 words or less double-spaced.  Self-nominations are also invited, but should be accompanied by at least one letter of support.  To represent a holistic view of the nominee, please coordinate submission of the letters and materials.  All nomination materials must be submitted online at by 11:59 p.m., Thursday, February 2, 2017.

If you experience technical difficulties with submitting the nomination materials, please email IT Services at
