Thanks to native architects Vayden McMorris, Wilson Chong, Verma Panton, Victor Patterson, Mostyn Campbell, Handel Lawson, Herbert Robinson, Rupert Bond, and Herbert Bradford, Jamaican architecture has experienced a resurgence over the last 60 years. Verma Paton also has the distinction of being one of the first female architects in the Caribbean.

The University of Maryland has named Steve Fetter as Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School, effective June 1, 2018. As Dean, Fetter will lead the Graduate School’s mission to advance graduate education and enhance the graduate student experience at UMD by working closely with staff of the university’s more than 230 graduate programs.

This week marked the spring term's Campus Celebration of Doctoral Graduates Luncheon. Designed to recognize doctoral graduates across all disciplines, the event also includes advisors, mentors, families, and guests. This spring, over 70 doctoral conferees attended, along with ten deans, and associate deans representing many of the colleges, and schools across the graduate campus.

The Graduate School will host the second Invest in Your Future, Summer Edition Student Success Symposium on Tuesday, June 5 from 9 am-4:30 pm in the Edward St. John Teaching and Learning Center.
With three concurrent tracks of sessions focused on writing, career planning, and developing professional skills, the symposium aims to launch participants into a productive summer. Master’s and doctoral students, as well as postdocs, can benefit from attending.

Ivan Lamas-Sanchez (Higher Education) has won the distinguished Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA). In 2019, Lamas-Sanchez will travel to Brazil as part of Fulbright's program to place grantees in schools overseas to supplement local English language instruction, and to provide native speakers in classrooms.
