Building a Network

Learn from Professionals and Build Your Networks

One way to learn about career paths is to talk to professionals in the field, especially if you are new to the field and want to know if it is truly right for you. Here are some resources to get you started on networking.

LinkedIn - LinkedIn is the world's largest professional network on the internet. You can use LinkedIn to find the right job or internship, connect and strengthen professional relationships, and learn the skills you need to succeed in your career. You can access LinkedIn from a desktop, LinkedIn mobile app, or mobile web experience.

Informational Interviews - In this guide you will find more information on how to conduct informational interviews. Make sure that you take a look at the guide before reaching out to individuals.

Building your Network - Professional networking, along with your academic performance and your extracurricular activities, is one of the most important steps to career development. It will help you build a set of relationships that will support you throughout your career. It’s best to build your network before you need a job.

Events - Pay special attention to events that focus on networking at the core: career panels, career and internship fairs, and employer networking and information sessions are intended to connect doctoral students and Postdocs to organizations of interest. To find out more, check the events calendar of your department, College/School, UMD, the Graduate School and University Career Center & The President's Promise for upcoming programs.
