Academic Action Targets

The Graduate School aims to take academic actions at different target dates during the semester.  These actions include GPA probation and dismissal, continuous enrollment and other actions. Please see this document for all academic action target dates for spring 2023.

Report of Examining Committee (REC)

All thesis and dissertation committee chairs are required to submit a request for the electronic Report of Examining Committee (REC) form. A request for the REC must be made at least ten business days before the scheduled final oral defense. A REC request is needed for all defenses regardless if the defense is fully remote, fully in person, or hybrid. Please note that since Fall 2021, all RECs must be signed/approved and processed using Adobe Sign only.

Remote Defense Reminders

Throughout the Spring 2023 semester, the Graduate School will follow the Provost’s guidance on in-person courses. When courses are in-person, defenses will proceed in-person unless the student or committee member(s) qualify for an exemption to the in-person defense policy.

The remote defense request process clarifies which exemptions are supported by current policy. We ask for ten business days to review all requests. If there are any emergency requests (final oral defense is in the next three business days or less), you can indicate that as a checkbox on the form. An email to graduate-dean@umd.edu is encouraged to raise our attention to urgent requests.
