10:00 - 11:00 a.m. - Set your Spring Goals

Make a Semester Plan! Setting your goals is an important first step in accomplishing all you aim for.  Goal setting can be both very specific--as in naming the steps you need to take to write a section of a paper--or broader--as in knowing what you want to accomplish in a semester to keep you on track to reach your graduate school goals.  In preparation for this session, you’ll review some basic goal setting frameworks and draft your goals for Spring 2021.  In the workshop, you’ll hear from graduate students who have made and achieved big plans--such as applying for major grants or finding an internship--who will share how thinking and planning ahead helped them reach their goals.

11:15 - 12:15 p.m. -  Designing for Visual Impact

Whether you are designing a poster, a presentation, or paper, your ability to communicate with effective visual designs will take your communication skills to the next level.  The good news is that you do not need to be a graphic designer to create visuals that impress audiences, illustrate and reinforce ideas, and leave a lasting impact.  We will explore some general design principles to live by, how to avoid some of the most common pitfalls, and some lesser-known features in common (and free) software that can help you bring your vision to life.
