The UMD Graduate School co-sponsors this year's BioScience Day, Genomics: Unlocking the Mysteries of Dogs, Viruses and More happening Tuesday, November 12, 9am-5pm in the Colony Ballroom of the Stamp Student Union.
The morning Innovation Corner features an Inventor Pitch Competition, where UMD faculty members and researchers will pitch their inventions to local venture capitalists who will select the "Best Inventor Pitch." The winner receives a monetary award. The day also includes a poster session open to UMD students and networking panels with UMD faculty. The program concludes with the Dr. Erik B. and Mrs. Joyce D.C. Young Lecture, "How to Build a Dog in 2,392,715,236 Easy Steps, presented by Elaine Ostrander,NIH Distinguished Investigator and Chief of the Cancer Genetics and Comparative Genomics Branch, National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institutes of Health.
The program provides a unique opportunity for executives and professionals in industry and government to discover the most recent advances in the biological sciences and biotechnology at the University of Maryland; promote the potential for academic-industry-government collaboration; meet university scientists and interact with graduate and undergraduate student researchers; network with colleagues who share an interest in the promotion of the biological sciences and the bioscience industry, and recruit employees and investigate job opportunities
"Bioscience Day is a wonderful event, open to the whole campus, that features research talks, an inventor pitch competition, poster session, networking panels, and a keynote lecture," said Gene Ferrick, Director of Operations for the College of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences. "The poster session showcases very impressive scientific work being mostly done by graduate and undergraduate students. This year's lecture topics look at the use of genomics in different and interesting ways, with the keynote sharing with us the construction of a dog."
