I grew up in New York, but I've been living in the Washington, D.C./Maryland/ Virginia, area since about 2005.

My degree is in International Education Policy, but I work with the Engineering School, I work with the Anthropology School.

Maryland really allows you to, sort of, move between and amongst departments and colleagues which I- which I think is- is great for someone like me who likes to do interdisciplinary work.

I'm from Syria, and I have been here for almost, like, 29 years. I've always, always loved languages, I wanted to focus on translation, but when I came here, I did not find what I was looking for, so I decided to go into accounting and minor in English.

I had this like book with me. And one page was like the crime rates (laugh). One page was the weather. And one page was the cost of living. So, I didn't want to go to a place with an extreme winter. I also wanted to still see winter, because I had never seen snow before. So, I thought like this area would be like the kind of the best balance, of because I was looking at the the ranks for the universities as well in chemistry.

I don't know exactly what got me into music, but I've been messing around with music since I was about five and its been so interesting to me since then that unsurprisingly, since I was 10 and started the trumpet, I've just been encapsulated. For as large of a student body as it is, it's, you s-, you see familiar faces when you're walking around every day.

When I visited the University of Maryland, I really felt this sense of, people knew each other and cared about each other, but you could also do your own thing. So, it was, there was a friendliness, there was community, but it wasn't stifling.

I've met so many awesome people here, and been challenged in ways that I couldn't imagine.

In high school, before I went to undergrad, I had a professor, had a French teacher whose daughter was doing international studies in undergrad and she was getting recruited by the UN and I was like, wow, that sounds like such, that sounds like the coolest thing in the world. I wanna work for the UN. And so, I did international studies in undergrad.
