    By Anna De Cheke Qualls Rebecca Evans Carroll (’66 EdD) was the first African-American woman to earn a doctorate from the University of Maryland, College Park-–the white institution which in the 1950’s barred her from pursuing graduate study. The University did not admit its first black undergraduate student until 1951.

    Dear Colleagues: We are grateful for the support that graduate assistants provide to units across campus on a daily basis. Today we announce that all graduate assistants will receive a 2 percent cost-of-living increase starting in January 2019. This is in line with the increase that faculty and staff will receive in January 2019 as well.

  • COVID-19 Policy Update

    Dear Campus Community,  We are glad to have our full community back on campus and are pleased that with the start of the semester, our COVID-19 cases have remained low and, reassuringly, the new sub-variants of COVID-19 are not translating into severe illness for most people. Over the last two years, we have been able to lessen the burden of COVID-19 within our community, thanks in part to our students, faculty and staff having received the initial vaccine and booster.

    Sarah Rothman, Doctoral candidate of the Department of Environmental Science and Technology, won the UMD 2022 3-Minute Thesis Competition (3MT), for her presentation titled “Mosquitoes and Urban Green Space across Socioeconomic Gradients.”
