Tuition Assistance for Fellows
The Graduate School provides tuition assistance to graduate fellowship recipients who are paid from specific Graduate School full-time fellowship funds (see list below), prestigious external fellowship funds, or by written agreement with The Graduate School (federal training grants).
Tuition assistance is subject to continued availability of resources (first come, first serve) and will be provided only for credits that are degree applicable (maximum of 10 credits per academic semester). Fellowship tuition assistance is only provided for Fall and Spring semesters.
Fellows enrolled in graduate programs with non-standard tuition rates (whether by course or by flat-fee pricing) will be responsible for tuition costs above the standard rate covered by fellowship tuition assistance.
Graduate School Fellowships that provide tuition assistance:
- The Graduate School’s Wylie Dissertation Fellowship,
- Lee Thornton Dissertation Fellowship,
- Spencer Award, and
- Longest Award are eligible for fellowship tuition assistance.
The amount of tuition assistance will depend on the rules outlined in the specific fellowship guidelines and may also be affected by a student's graduate assistantship position.
Graduate Fellows Holding Prestigious External Fellowships
Graduate students holding prestigious external fellowships may be eligible for fellowship tuition assistance. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) or contractual agreement must be filed with The Graduate School. Unless otherwise specified in the MOU or contract, fellowship tuition assistance credits will be awarded as follows:
- A prestigious external fellowship carrying an annual stipend of at least $27,500 for 9 months, or $35,000 for 12 months, may be awarded up to 10 credits of tuition assistance per semester (fall and spring only).
- A prestigious external fellowship carrying an annual stipend of at least $13,750 for 9 months, or $17,500 for 12 months, may be awarded up to 5 credits of tuition assistance per semester (fall and spring only).
Graduate Fellows on Federal Training Grants
Federal training grants covering only partial tuition for fellows may be eligible for an institutional match of fellowship tuition assistance. Upon written agreement with The Graduate School, tuition assistance may be awarded to training grants on a 60% (grant) / 40% (GS) matching basis.
Eligible students must complete the Tuition Assistance Request Form and upload the following required documentation by the deadlines listed below:
- Email acknowledgement from your graduate program confirming your eligibility for the tuition assistance (the email should be from your Director of Graduate Studies or Coordinator of Graduate Studies).
- A copy of your fellowship offer letter.
- A copy of your fellowship MOU/award provisions.
- Proof of payment (screenshot of student bill or payment receipt).
- If you are a Federal training grant fellow, you also need to include proof of payment (copy of SAS) and a copy of The Graduate School’s support letter.
