Starting in Winter 2024, the new course Personal Financial Planning (FMSC644) will be available to students, and will be offered every term and semester moving forward. This is a great opportunity to become equipped with essential financial literacy skills that will serve you well in both your academic and professional journeys. Career Development vs. Job Search
It is critical to remember that you need to develop a solid understanding of your future career (career development) before launching a successful job search (applying and securing job offers). Do not wait last minute when you are about to finish your doctoral or postdoctoral journey to engage in this process.
Developing a career takes time, efforts, and becomes easier when you do a little bit as you go.
Society of Fellows
The Graduate School's Society of Fellows is a talented group of students at UMD who hold recruitment awards such as the Flagship Fellowship, President's Fellowship, McNair Doctoral Fellowship, GEM Fellowship, and SREB Doctoral Scholar Award. Throughout the course of the semester, The Graduate School holds events such as information sessions, coffees, and receptions. These gatherings help to keep everyone connected, encourage collaboration, and build networks.
Eat, Grow and Learn Series
The Eat, Grow and Learn Sessions are dedicated to assisting graduate students with creating connections and finding community. The sessions include a free lunch and a chance to connect with others.

Graduate Program Mentoring Excellence Award
The Graduate Program Mentoring Excellence Award recognizes graduate programs that make mentoring a core program responsibility by building a culture of high-quality, inclusive, and accountable mentoring. We seek to spotlight programs that use evidence-based, equitable, responsive, and sustainable mentoring practices, and that use measurable outcomes to support graduate students’ success and belonging, while preparing them for diverse career pathways. This honor comes with a $1,000 award to the department to support mentoring activities.
A2i Industry Insights (Oct. 2023)
Accelerate to Industry (A2i) Industry Insights module focuses on preparing graduate students and Postdocs for careers in the private sector (also commonly referred to as "business"), non-profit, and government. While this module takes its focus from its name, a comprehensive look at topics related to the job search is covered in this series through talks by industry experts and workshops that cover key competencies topics.
Doctoral Career Design Course (Sep. 2023)
The Doctoral Career Design Course offers current doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars the opportunity to participate in intentional career exploration and decision-making. Given the changing career landscape, early engagement in the career planning process will better prepare doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars to pursue meaningful career pathways after graduate school or postdoctoral training.
International PhD Career Readiness Series (Nov. 2023)
The International PhD Career Readiness Series is intentionally designed to focus on providing strategies of career preparation for international PhD candidates and Postdocs in the United States, including best practices on navigating PhD career landscape and U.S. workplace culture, job search process, and how to prepare for the immigration portfolio.
