University-Wide Career Resources

There are a variety of career and professional development resources on campus that graduate students and postdoctoral scholars have access to outside of The Graduate School!

International Student and Scholar Services: International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) provides career advice and workshops in their International Terp Career Development Program. Students will learn about topics, such as searching for a job in the US, formatting a resume, and transitioning to a work visa. ISSS also assists students with transitioning to the US, advising on immigration requirements, and making the most of their academic experience. The Fall 2026 International Terp Career Development schedule is available.

The University Career Center and the President’s Promise: The University Career Center has a variety of events and resources for graduate students. They also use Handshake to post events and connect students with potential internships, jobs, and career services. Both master’s and doctoral students can also schedule a 30-minute appointment with a career advisor. 

The Teaching and Learning Transformation Center: The Teaching and Learning Transformation Center offers a Graduate TA and Instructor Orientation every semester. They also provide graduate TAs and instructors with various professional development opportunities and resources, such as the University Teaching and Learning Program and teaching portfolio support. 

The Graduate School Center for Writing and Oral Communication: Through the Center for Writing and Oral Communication, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars can schedule consultations to receive feedback on, talk through, or brainstorm for papers and presentations. They also host weekly write-ins, as well as workshops and retreats throughout the semester.  

Alumni Association: The University of Maryland Alumni Association has developed career guides covering elements of the job search and building out your professional community. They also provide many ways for graduate students get get involved with events that can help your career and professional development journey.

College-Specific Resources: Several schools and colleges also have dedicated career offices that support graduate students, such as the Office of Career Services in the Robert H. Smith School of Business, Engineering Career Services in the A. James Clark School of Engineering, and Career Connections in the School of Public Policy.
