Request for Electronic Report of Examining Committee
Updated June 2023
For dissertation and thesis defenses that will take place after 5/30/2023, a separate REC request to the Graduate School is no longer required. If you have already submitted a REC request to the Graduate School for a defense that is scheduled after 5/30/3023, the REC form will be sent out by the Office of Registrar three business days prior to the defense date that was indicated on the request.
Assessement Deadlines
Graduate Learning Outcomes Assessment (GLOA) reports for doctoral programs will be due every three years, starting in the 2022-2023 academic year. Doctoral programs within each College/School will be divided into 2-3 assessment groups. This figure summarizes the GLOA assessment cycle across four years.
Developing Your Assessment Approach
Now that you understand the important differences between benchmarking and assessment, the guiding questions below can help your graduate faculty structure their initial conversations about the Graduate Learning Outcomes Assessment (GLOA) process. To facilitate these initial conversations, programs should consider their core learning competencies.

Graduate Learning Outcomes Assessment
Graduate Learning Outcomes Assessment (GLOA) improves graduate education through evaluating how well students are achieving a program’s academic goals. A sustained GLOA process is the national standard for improving teaching, mentoring, and learning in higher education.
Getting Your GLOA Started
The Graduate Learning Outcomes Assessment (GLOA) Process begins with the faculty in a graduate program selecting at least one graduate learning outcome for assessment. The learning outcomes for graduate programs will vary. Below are examples of graduate student core learning competencies that programs can consider for their GLOA. Programs may also identify unique learning competencies. The graduate learning outcome that each program selects to assess will come from a single core competency.
Core Competencies (Examples)
Limited Submission Fellowship Opportunities
The fellowships listed below are limited submission fellowships, meaning a UMD nomination is required for the application.
Resources for Students
Graduate students seeking external grants and fellowships are encouraged to work with their Director of Graduate Studies and/or advisor to develop effective application materials. Agencies want the best possible proposals, so you are encouraged to contact a funding agency to ask appropriate, substantive questions during the application process. Speaking with the funding agency and faculty who have interacted with the funding agency will give you special insights.
Tuition Awards for Fellows
The Graduate School provides a tuition award to graduate fellowship recipients who are paid from University and Dean’s Fellowship funds, Graduate School full-time fellowship funds, prestigious external fellowship funds, or by written agreement with the Graduate School. Tuition awards are subject to continued availability of resources and will be provided only for credits that are degree applicable. Additional information is below.
