The Impact of Researcher Identity and Positionality
By Hannah Jardine As an education researcher, I regularly contemplate my role as a researcher and my relationship with my research subjects. I am not alone in this; Vanessa Siddle Walker suggested “the role of the researcher in the research process” is an issue in education research that requires attention and “introspective conversation.” [1] For me, this deep reflection on how my identity and positionality impact my role as a researcher began with my first major education research experience.

I will graduate this December. I still love UMD, I think I will miss here, in the future.
I think I got interested in accounting when I was very little, because my mother is also an accountant, so I can get- touch with numbers when I was very little. I can see how big companies operate, by seeing their financial statement, and also, I can connect with different people, and, by building a longterm relationship.

While in my undergrad, I picked up some courses related to signals and systems, and signals in general, and those courses really got me into telecommunications, and then I worked for a big telecommunications multinational, which was based in Sweden. The University of Maryland offered me a good mix of managerial courses, as well as technical courses related to telecommunications. This was one of its kind program, all across the U.S.
