Decision and Enrollment

Postdoctoral Appointments

A postdoctoral appointment is a temporary one designed to give individuals an opportunity to conduct research under the guidance of a faculty mentor and to prepare for careers in higher education, government, industry, and other sectors of the economy. For many, postdoctoral work is a critical step in securing future employment.

An individual with a postdoctoral appointment at UMD:

Postdoctoral Fellows

Postdoctoral fellows receive stipends, rather than a salary, for independent research and training. Their stipends are funded by either institutional or individual research fellowships. This funding is not intended to pay compensation for services, nor should a postdoctoral fellow be required to perform services to receive the grant. Therefore, postdoctoral fellows are NOT classified as employees.

Checklist for New Students

1. Fulfill Conditions of Enrollment

If you have been enrolled conditionally, your official admission letter listed the actions that you must take to maintain or secure full enrollment.

The most common condition is to have a hard copy of your official transcripts sent directly from the institution to the university (or hand-delivered in a sealed envelope). The transcript must show the degree awarded. If you just recently graduated, wait until the transcript records degree awarded.

Tax Information for Fellows

Fellowship and award recipients must pay tax on the stipends that they receive to cover living and general expenses but may deduct certain educational expenses. Amounts awarded in payment of tuition are not taxable for fellows. Taxes are not withheld from stipends disbursed through student financial aid, so students may choose to file an estimated tax payment.

For domestic students, stipends are disbursed through the Office of Student Financial Aid.
