Establishing a Mentoring Relationship
When a postdoc begins their position, the postdoc and their faculty mentor/supervisor should meet to discuss their shared expectations. Creating an Individual Development Plan (IDP) helps postdocs and their mentors assess skills, identify short and long term goals, and determine a plan for achieving research, professional, and career goals.
Qualities of Effective Mentoring
Effective mentoring takes effort and is mastered through experience. Mentoring requires good interpersonal skills: listening, empathy, and problem solving. Good mentoring practices vary according to the needs and stage of professional and academic development of each mentee. Effective mentoring requires planning and thought to help the mentee develop into a fully independent researcher.
