The David and Winifred "Winkle" Fulk Fellowship
The David and Winifred "Winkle" Fulk Fellowship Fund, established in 2021 by Mary C. Rack, provides support to doctoral students whose doctoral study focuses on mathematics education. This is a $5000 summer research fellowship and supports projects and activities that further advance student's doctoral research.
Dr. David Fulk ('71 PhD, Animal Science) and Dr. Winifred "Winkle" Fulk ('70 PhD, Physiology) had strong ties to the University of Maryland, and its graduate programs. After their doctoral programs, they moved to Kansas where Dr. David Fulk had a long career at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Dr. Winkle Fulk became a highly-respected mathematics faculty member at Johnson Community College.
Eligibility: Eligible candidates are University of Maryland doctoral students who are enrolled in a graduate program within the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, or in a program with a focus on Mathematics Education. The student can be at any stage in the program. Preference is given to doctoral students who intend to pursue an academic teaching career at a community college or teaching-focused university/college.

Eligibility Information
To be eligible, the applicant must:
- Be enrolled at the University of Maryland in a doctoral program within the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR), or a program that focuses on Mathematics Education;
- Students can be at any stage of their program;
- Preference is given to doctoral students who intend to pursue an academic teaching career at a community college or teaching-focused university/college;
- Devote the summer toward a research project.
Students may receive the David and Winkle Fulk Fellowship only one time. Fellowships may not be deferred. Fellowships are awarded to specific students and are not transferable to other students.
Application Requirements
A complete application must include:
- A student-written proposal (2-page maximum, double spaced, one-inch margins). Please write for a non-specialist audience. The proposal should describe:
a. the nature of the work to be accomplished during the summer;
b. the plan for its execution; and
c. how the summer project fits within the program’s timetable for completing graduation requirements.
**students are not permitted to use ChatGPT or other AI software. - The student’s CV (2-page maximum).
- Letter of support from the student’s academic advisor (maximum 2 pages) describing
- the student’s accomplishments. (Advisor to submit separately).
- Recommendation Surveys from the program’s Director and Coordinator that collect information about programmatic standards and norms. (Program to submit separately).
